Pete is from Querétaro, México, he grew up around animals, which led to his passion and respect for them. Since he was young, he demonstrated much interest and passion for the sea and sea life, and decided to dedicate his life to his studies and conservation. He studied his bachelor’s degree at the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California Sur, and his tesis was a study to determine the ecological effect of shark fisheries on the population of giant squid in the Gulf of California, in order to determine the importance of top predators to the ecosystem, and to develop methods of management and conservation. He came to Pelagios Kakunjá as a volunteer in 2013, and started his master’s studies at CICIMAR in 2015 carrying out his research with us about hammerhead sharks in the Gulf of California. He developed his PhD at CICIMAR and Pelagios Kakunjá, with a research about genetics of hammerhead sharks in the Eastern Tropical Pacific. Pete graduated in june 2023.
